Jan ‘09: Best of 2008 Mixtape

Listen to Jan 08: Best of 2008 mixtape

A new mixtape is up for your listening pleasure. This one is a list of some of my favorite songs from 2008.  I tried to keep a two track max per artist which for some were really hard to do. She & Him, Stereoheroes, The Walkmen, Lone, MGMT, Flying Lotus and zZz all should have their entire albums checked out. I tried my best to arrange these into a good mixtape set (the time it took me to drink my can of Ruby Red Squirt). It is really hard though to get a good flow due to the number of tracks, range of genres, and the lack of a cute girl to give a tape to. But if you are a cute girl send me an email and I will mail you a tape. Continue reading Jan ‘09: Best of 2008 Mixtape

No update, come back tomorrow.

Is this just a ploy to drive traffic to my stupid blog? Maybe. Seriously though some stuff I needed to get done took longer than I thought and I wasn’t able to finish what I wanted to share with you guys today. What I was going to show today was the launching of a new site, Left Brain, Write Brain. Until I do finish coding (hopefully tomorrow) I guess you can go check out the placeholder page (I made it so ugly that it is beautiful) or some funny You Tube videos to pass the time.

A little more 3D.

Okay so the test render finished while I slept a little bit. Turned out well I think, the object motion blur doesn’t look that great but this was just a test. Here’s a little more of a preview of this project. Now just imagine this with a bunch of paint flying all over the place.

…and this wasn’t the update/news. You still have to wait… for me to finish watching these Watchmen motion comics and actually finish it for you. In the meantime watch my video.

A little 3D. Come back tommorrow.

Sorry I have been trying to really devote most of my time toward working on some side projects so the updates have been pretty lean lately. But I thought I would post what I worked on today after playing some Risk (I won). My computer has been making some really funny noises lately and I definitely need a new video card for this 3D stuff. Come back tomorrow though for some news.

And if there isn’t anything there… come back the next day.

Red Fang - Prehistoric Dog

A couple of friends and I have a little game we like to play where we send each other the most horrible, funny, or disgusting thing we can find on the internet that day, each day trying to one up the previous. Meagan today sent me a cool music video for Red Fang, a local Portland band. The video is directed by Rob “Whitey” McConnaughy (who you probably have seen here and there behind the camera on the Jackass movies and does a lot of film/videography for commercials). This video definitely has a Portland feel with the beards, vintage t-shirts, and copious amounts of cheap beer (this time Tecate is featured more than the hometown favorite PBR). Though I have never seen any LARPers in any of the parks around town, I still would like to believe that this video is actually a documentary and set to Red Fang’s “Prehistoric Dog”.

Does anybody from Portland know what park this is?

GTA: Vice City, Kasabien and a Cosby sweater?

Kanye West released last week 808’s & Heartbreak which I have been slipping into my playlist consistently since I picked it up. His new album I think is really good and that somewhat surprised me after not liking most of his 2nd and 3rd albums. I have always admired Kanye for producing all of his own songs and his decision to simplify things and feature prominently the classic Roland TR-808 in this album is refreshing. While the music has been simplified in most of the songs his voice is Autotuned only a notch or two below unrecognizable. Even with all of these changes the biggest change is to the somber mood of this album. Most of his previous work has been about being number one in “the game” and other stuff that I can’t relate with at all and was best suited for coliseums full of people to sing along with (See “Touch the Sky,” “Good Life,” etc.). I don’t really see that many people singing along with “Streetlights” and “Welcome to Heartbreak”. And damn it that is the way I like it. Kanye manages to be emotional and voice his recent losses without sounding like a douche.

And no gunshot sound effects either.

Back to the point of this post. GTA: Vice City, Kasabien and a Cosby sweater. Those were the three things that came to mind when I saw Kanye West’s newest music video, Heartless. And some really choppy feeling animation which was either a choice or just really bad rotoscoping. (See the full post for comparison evidence.)
